Rhizobial Symbiotic Gene Compendium
Comprehensive reference of symbiotic genes in Bradyrhizobium spp. and related rhizobia (Sinorhizobium, Rhizobium, Mesorhizobium, Azorhizobium and others), with verified literature citations and hyperlinks. Covers nodulation (nod/nol/noe), nitrogen fixation (nif/fix), hydrogen uptake (hup/hyp), type III secretion (T3SS/nop), and regulatory genes. Primary focus on Bradyrhizobium.

Conservation across diazotrophic Bradyrhizobium / rhizobia:
● Universal present in all diazotrophic rhizobia |
● Common present in most; very few exceptions |
◐ Variable widespread but genus/clade-restricted |
○ Restricted strain- or species-specific
- nod/nol/noe — Nod factor (LCO) biosynthesis, decoration, and export genes. nodABCDIJ are universal among nod-based nodulators; all others are accessory.
- nif — Nitrogen fixation structural/biosynthetic genes. nifHDKENBASU are universally conserved across all diazotrophs.
- fix — Rhizobia-specific symbiotic N₂ fixation genes. fixABCX and fixNOQPGHIS are universal in symbiotic rhizobia. etfSL are housekeeping ETF paralogs (Group I) distinct from the symbiotic FixA/FixB (Group II).
- hup/hyp — Hydrogen uptake hydrogenase and maturation genes; variable — present in Hup⁺ strains only.
- T3SS/nop — Type III secretion system and effectors; variable — widespread in Bradyrhizobium but not universal.
- Regulatory/Other — σ⁵⁴ (rpoN) is universal; others are variable or Bradyrhizobium-specific.
